About Kagando Institute of Health Sciences

Kagando Institute of Health Sciences (KIHS) is a premier health training institution operating under Kagando Rural Development Centre (KARUDEC), the development arm of the Church of Uganda in the Anglican Diocese of South Rwenzori. The Institute is dedicated to producing competent, ethical, and compassionate health professionals through quality education, practical clinical training, research, innovation, and community service.

The Institute was formed through the merger of Kagando School of Nursing and Midwifery and Kagando School of Allied Health Sciences, bringing together decades of excellence in training healthcare professionals under one institution. This integration has strengthened the Institute’s capacity to provide comprehensive health sciences education while responding to the growing demand for skilled health workers in Uganda and beyond.

Our History

Health professional training at Kagando dates back to the 1960s, when Nursing Aide training commenced in 1965, laying the foundation for the institution’s nursing education programmes. On 3rd November 1998, the nursing school was officially inaugurated as a nationally recognised training institution after receiving accreditation from the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC) and the Ministry of Education and Sports. The school opened with an inaugural class of 32 students and has since grown into one of the leading nursing and midwifery training institutions in western Uganda, currently enrolling over 1500 students.

Training in allied health disciplines has an equally rich history. During the 1970s, Kagando Hospital began training Laboratory Microscopists to support diagnostic services in the region. In 1994, the hospital expanded its training by introducing programmes for Laboratory Attendants, awarding certificate qualifications.

Recognising the increasing demand for qualified laboratory professionals, KARUDEC established a formal School of Medical Laboratory Technology in 2011, offering both Certificate and Diploma programmes in Medical Laboratory Technology recognised by the Government of Uganda. The school enrolled its pioneer class of 13 students and initially operated in affiliation with Mengo Hospital School of Medical Laboratory Technology, where students sat their Uganda Allied Health Examinations Board (UAHEB) examinations.

The Allied Health School continued to expand steadily. In 2013, it received a licence from the Ministry of Education and Sports to independently offer the Certificate in Medical Laboratory Techniques, leading to increased student enrolment. In 2016, the institution received approval to introduce the Certificate in Medical Theatre Techniques, followed by the introduction of the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology in 2017.

Today, these historic institutions have been unified as Kagando Institute of Health Sciences, creating a multidisciplinary centre of excellence for health sciences education. The Institute continues to build on its rich heritage by providing competency-based training that combines classroom instruction, simulation, extensive clinical practice at Kagando Hospital and affiliated health facilities, and community-based learning.
